I found a patch of this tiny earth star on mossy sand dunes on the East coast of Scotland. The fruit body is sessile, there’s adherent rubbish on the bases of all of them, the mouth zone is plicate with no obvious ring. It doesn’t colour change when bruised. They are less than 2cm across (there’s a snail shell for size reference). Any ideas? I have my suspicions, but the species that seems to match is not recorded in the area.

I assume you’re hoping for Geastrum elegans. Looks right, though it is not a species I’m familiar with. You could contact Brian Douglas at Kew (he’s on Facebook) since he may well be interested.

Thank you, yes, when I keyed it out I got G elegans, which seemed unlikely, but I couldn’t see a suitable alternative.
