This fungus was photographed on 26th October at Groton Wood near Hadleigh, Suffolk. This is an ancient woodland noted for small-leaved Lime coppice . However, there are many deciduous trees including oak. This fungus was in a mixed deciduous tree area and I unfortunately only superficially reviewed this fungus assuming it to be Lactarius quietus. Having looked at the photos though, I am now concerned that the gills may be inconsistent with this species as they are not particularly crowded. The cap was about 5cms diameter and with a shallow depression in the centre. Difficult to describe the colour – possibly reddish pink/brown, darkest in the middle fading at the perimeter. The stipe was a similar colour to the perimeter of the cap. It appeared to have no ring. The gills though appeared distant and surely therefore inconsistent with the Lactarius species. As usual I would very much welcome comments.
