    Hello

I found this rust in a communal garden in Painswick, Gloucestershire on several walnut leaves. Again as I didn’t have permission to collect fungi I had to make do with a photo. I have looked in the Henderson Host Plant Guide however there aren’t any species listed under Juglans. Does anyone have any experience with rusts on walnuts?

    Thanks a lot

I may well be wrong, but rather than being rust or fungal, the growths may be caused by the Walnut Leaf Gall Mite (Aceria erinea) or similar Eriophyidae spp.

Thanks Nick, I had gone for rust due to the orange colour and I’d assumed the black spots on the surface were pycnidia, but I’ll chase that lead.

I hope I haven’t sent you on a wild goose chase, James. Having just seen an image of Pear Rust (Gymnosporangium sabinae) with a similar cluster of tiny black specks, I’ve got a feeling I may well have! Time for expert advice!
