This morning I found a clump of white mushrooms growing on the ground on the side of a road. It was underneath species like Lawson Cypress, Yew, Holly and Spotted & Cherry Laurels and probably more species too. There was no distinct smell apart from the smell of earth and decomposing leaf litter.

Even with your description of the smell as “earth and decomposing leaf litter” I am pretty sure this is St Georges Mushroom.

What does St George’s Mushroom usually smell like? I have a mild cold so I’m not smelling as well as I usually do. :(

It usually has a strong “mealy” smell sometimes described as wet flour.

Thanks. To be honest, I’m not quite sure what wet flour smells like!

            It smells like St. George’s Mushrooms. :D – (Sorry, couldn’t resist – I’ll get my coat 😳 :D ).

            Regards,

OK!! I guess I’m more of a naturalist than a baker… but now I know that if I do make bread then if the flour smells like St George’s Mushroom, it’s good! ;)
