      Mianly a test of the new forum, another picture from the New Forest of Palicella filamentosa:

        Nice to see the forum is back!

        Over the interregnum I have seen this taxa in a few places in the New Forest on Oak, all on Oak twigs and quite easy to spot from the sliver patches of bark and the irregularly rounded Arthonia like apothecia. Mostly rather scrappy specimens but this is a nice specimen from my home wood

        The spores were Spores 35 – 38 x 10 – 12 µm 7 – 9 septate.

          Great to see the forum back and well done migrating old the old posts over, along with the pictures, generally looks good. I have tried to post (one new topic and answers to a couple of posts), but nothing has come up yet. Are they stuck in moderation?

            Yes other than the big spores, the apothecia do look similar to those of Naevia, but the ascomatal gel being I+ red would be different from the species that Thiyagaraja et al. (2020) included in Naevia. Nothing with spores as big as my taxa in his table either. I imagine it would need sequencing to place the species. It does seem to match specimens that have been called Arthonia hypobela, but I would not be surprised if it was not that!

            Will look out for more, I think there is a bit of it about in the New Forest, but it is not frequent.

              I have sympathy with the idea that Polycauliona candelaria and P. ucrainica are the same species; they are certainly not easy to seperate. I would like larger thalli but, as stated, it seems closer to P. ucrainica.

                Oh yes with Rinodina aspersa and Trapelia obtegens, Rinodina aspersa has atranorin, so gives a K/UV(dry)+ bright yellow spot test while Trapelia obtegens does not, which is useful.

                  Found Palicella filamentosa in Hampshire now. It was on lgnum on a standing dead Yew tree in pasture woodland at Gorley Bushes, Fritham in The New Forest.

                  Got a K/UV(dry)+ bright yellow spot test in the field and the other features martched:

                  Spores & paraphyses tips in K

                  I am fairly sure all my Lecanora aitema records from Hampshire were of this, they were C- and not obviously Lecanora symmicta, but I was a bit worried by the paler disks, just had not checked systematically. Great Kian has got this.

                    I have not looked at A. pelidna for sometime but here is some Amandinea punctata I just looked at for work:

                      I have been identifying it from the thallus composed of rounded granules. Your one is so depurperate I can not realy say any thing about it.

                      Useful looking at the pictures from that day. This one was labelled Trapelia obtegens & Amandinea lecideina, but the Trapelia obtegens is clearly Rinodina aspersa, which would be the second Hampshire site, an excellent belated find.

                        The l’Association française de Lichénologie website gives Arthonia diploiciae as “Asques octosporés” i.e. Asci eight-spored https://www.afl-lichenologie.fr/Photos_AFL/Photos_AFL_A/Textes_A3/Arthonia_diploiciae.htm” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.afl-lichenologie.fr/Photos_AFL/Photos_AFL_A/Textes_A3/Arthonia_diploiciae.htm. Everyone else says 4 spored. I would assume your collection is just an anomalous Arthonia diploiciae specimen. Best to record it as this species but note that it was eight spored, so that, if it ever proves to be significant, and it is a different taxa, it can be corrected.

                          OK that is strange. There is definitely Chaenotheca trichialis in there, but the majority of the pins look very very like a Sclerophora species. Sclerophora peronella is the one with the smallest spores but these should be 3–3.5 µm diam., which is a bit larger than you give. The translucent stalk should also have a red-brown core visible when wet for this species. Whatever it is, a Sclerophora species would be a major rediscovery/discovery for Yorkshire. Sclerophora species are not parasitic and should have their own thallus with Trentepohlia as the algae. If it is a Sclerophora species, it may just be growing through the Chaenotheca trichialis.

                            I checked my herbarium and the two “Caloplaca ulcerosa” specimens I had, both appeared to be Caloplaca alstrupii! ho hum.

                            I do have photo of Coppinsiella ulcerosa however:

                            This does look very like your specimen and one thing visible on both is a thin, soon excluded thaline margin. Caloplaca alstrupii lacks any sign of this, so I sure your specimen is Coppinsiella ulcerosa.

                              Spores in K, quite varied in shape and 9 – 11 x 6 – 8 µm with the septa just about half the length of the spore.

                              Caloplaca alstrupii is usually sterile but quite common and found on damaged young trees. I think Coppinsiella ulcerosa is actually quite a bit less frequent (but more often fertile) and typically found on older wounded trees.

                              I have some older Coppinsiella ulcerosa collections, I will have a look at the spores in these tomorrow.

                                What I can see of the soralia look more like those of Caloplaca alstrupii, with a rim of thallus “exploding” around the pustule. The very yellow soralia (P5120132.jpg) belong to something else I think; there is a sorediate Flavoplaca species in other pictures.

                                  An important record whatever it is!

                                  Paul might be more informed on this, but looking at your data and pictures I would think it is more likely to be Huneckia pollinii. Some of the Italic pictures do show brown caps to the paraphyses, I think, and the spore sizes are closer. The habitat is also a better match; Caloplaca caesiorufella has only been found in very exposed maritime situations on lignum and moss Britain. Is the hymenium inspersed with oil droplets or not, apparently Huneckia pollinii is not and Caloplaca caesiorufella is?
