suillus ? Larch or slipper jack?

Please try to include photos to show all parts of the fungus, eg top, stem, and gills.
Note any smells, and associated trees or plants (eg oak, birch). A spore print can be very useful.

suillus ? Larch or slipper jack?

Post by irturner » Thu Oct 10, 2019 6:15 pm

found this in north west Leicestershire at a site of mixed heath and woodland near a boundary wall with predominantly silver birch but conifers on the other side in a wood.
This looks like a bolete but seems rather pale for a Birch Bolete so thought maybe Larch and there are slippery jacks around

What I can see of the stipe says this is a Leccinum.
There are some with paler caps.
L. holopus can flush green at the cap edge when older and is associated with Birch.
That might be the case here but it's not clear.

Agree with Steve. Larch bolete and slippery jacks have rings, and are usually really sticky, unless there has been prolonged dry weather.
