How long is the DNA of a mushroom (Trametes, Russula, Agaricus, etc.)?
How long is DNA of lichens?
How much DNA do they sequence nowaday? They just sequence ITS region (500-800 bp) or more?
Thanks
DNA length
Re: DNA length
According to Wikipedia, fungal genomes are among the smallest genomes of eukaryotes with sizes of fungal genomes ranging from less than 10 Mbp to hundreds of Mbp. Ascomycota: approximately 37 Mbp and Basidiomycota approx. 47 Mbp.
Units are base pairs (bp) so 10Mbp is ten thousand base pairs.
Lichens would have fungal DNA similar to values given above together with an algal and bacterial component.
Although the ITS region is still widely used for barcoding, there are several other genes used, particularly when phylogenetic work is carried out. Examples that may be seen in research papers include:
Translational elongation factor 1α (TEF1α)
RNA polymerase II subunit RPB1
cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)

Re: DNA length
Just to clarify/correct the above: -David H wrote: Thu May 30, 2024 7:27 pm. . . . Units are base pairs (bp) so 10Mbp is ten thousand base pairs. . . .
10 Mbp = 10 million-base-pairs. (Ten thousand base pairs, as mentioned above, would be 10kbp i.e. ten kilo-base-pairs).

Mike.
