Post by alindsay » Mon Aug 15, 2016 5:51 pm

Is it possible to name this rust from photos only?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alison,

I think this should be Uromyces geranii.

Regards,
Mike.
Common sense is not so common.

spot on Mike . . . if this was found in Bedfordshire - there isn't a record on FRDBI from that Vice-county :o

Thanks Mike for the ID and confirmation, Chris.

I shall inform the Bedfordshire recorder and I still have samples for verification.

do let us know if it's a first Alison - as I say repeatedly there's a lot of good work that can be done by the amateur (with and without microscopy) in the area of plant pathogens; many of them - especially the powdery mildews - are spreading with (one assumes) climate change and the amateur has a lot to contribute as their range expands . . .

The Bedfordshire recorder, Alan Outen says that he does have records of Uromyces geranii found in the county, though this would be a new location.

I am still trying to understand why his records do not appear on the FRDBI. Are county recorders not authorised to confirm finds on FRDBI maps?

This makes records very misleading.

I will send samples to Alan and Kew so that the find can be formalised and made public.

Alison.

A new improved version of FRDBI is in the pipeline. I have a lot of county records pending which are not (yet) on the database; the new version will make it a lot easier for records to be added and edited . . .

Hi Chris, Any word on when FRDBI2 will be up and running? At BMS Group Leaders' Meeting it was said 'within 1-2 weeks' but I've heard nothing since.
