Small asco on alder (?)

Post by Leif » Thu Oct 29, 2015 9:47 pm

This was on either alder (most likely) or willow:

About 1cm tall and with a small cup at the apex. I assume it is a young cup fungus and hence nothing like the mature fungus. Does anyone have any suggestions? No microscopy, though I have a few dried specimens. I have been a bit too busy with more approachable specimens, and haven't had the enthusiasm to tackle this one.

Could it be young Scarlet Elfcup - Sarcoscypha sp. ? - it looks like it might be turning red.

Sarcoscypha austriaca etc are more robust in my experience. The thought did occur to me.
