Peziza

Post by MikeB » Wed May 13, 2015 7:34 pm

Just a quick post to tell you what I found out today......Peziza repanda, P micropus, P cerea and P varia - looks like they are now collectively known as P varia.
Fungi are hard enough without name changes but its all worth knowing!

Hi Mike
this isn't just a matter of name changes, it's reflecting the fact that thanks to molecular (DNA) studies the differences between the fungi known by those names cannot be maintained. They may look different to us, but those differences might be insignificant at the species level.
Think people with blond/dark/red hair or with different skin colours - in the great scheme of things totally irrelevant . . . .

Nicely explained Chris, the opposite is also true, identical looking species can be completely unrelated .... :?
