Is this a fungus ??

Please try to include photos to show all parts of the fungus, eg top, stem, and gills.
Note any smells, and associated trees or plants (eg oak, birch). A spore print can be very useful.

Is this a fungus ??

Post by Wood Wanderer » Fri Oct 12, 2018 12:17 pm

As it is pouring down outside I have been reviewing some photos I took earlier this week...

Some of these have me perplexed as I assume it is fungal but as to where to look I am at a loss.

Only small at less than 1 cm across, gelatinous membrane that appears to be covering "eggs", I am toying with it being the immature stage of one of the bird's nest fungi but as I have never seen any before I am far from convinced. The usual google search failed to find a similar image although some of my literature does describe the "lentil shaped eggs as floating in a transparent jelly"

I found several of these growing singly on old wood lying on the edge of a small pond.

Any help even if I am well off beam would be gratefully received

Many thanks for your thoughts Andreas

I was never very convinced this was fungal so I was clearly right to be unsure

Kind regards

John
