Super spores - but what's the fungus!?

Another frustrating fungus - very distinctive, especially the spores, but help needed with the ID.
Cap caramel, waxy when dry, 4.5-7cm, upturned in mature fruit-body.
Gills brown, free to emarginate, fairly widely spaced.
Stem of sample white, 65 x 8mm, slight darkening when bruised, white hairs at base.
No distinctive smell or taste.
Spore print brown; spores wonderful! Elongated lemon-shaped, 10-15 x 6-9um; EDF image with non-EDF inset.
Habitat: Small group found on side of grassy path in deciduous woodland (mainly oak and birch).
Maybe a Cortinarius? I don't really don't know!

Many thanks, Adam, for the suggestion - certainly looks promising! Based on habitat, and the size and features of the spores, Hebeloma sacchariolens, which is described by Phillips as a complex, seems a possibility. Nice visuals at http://www.ambmuggia.it/forum/aapages/a ... iolens.htm

Hello,

yes, definitely a Hebeloma.
The strongly dextrinoid spores and the likewise strongly loosening perispore suggest one of the sacchariolens-group, though the smell is said to be indistinct.
For determination you need thorough measurements of the cheilocystidia, the number of gills that reach the stipe, ecology - and the new monograph (Fungi Europaei vol. 14)

Are these cystidia? If they are, they might be best described as cylindrical.
The poor fungus cap has been under a lid for four days now, but I would describe the smell, surprisingly, as sweet.
Perhaps this, along with the other features, helps to put the fungus in H. sect. Sacchariolentia (or the iRecord group, Hebeloma sacchariolens agg.).
