Large light brown mushroom on edge of mixed woods

Please try to include photos to show all parts of the fungus, eg top, stem, and gills.
Note any smells, and associated trees or plants (eg oak, birch). A spore print can be very useful.

Large light brown mushroom on edge of mixed woods

Post by destinyman » Thu Aug 16, 2018 7:05 pm

Hello guys I’ve recently developed a big interest in fungi and went on my first foray yesterday evening. I saw this fungi on the edge of a wood from my car and had to go to investigate. I think I know what it is but it would be good if someone else could help with it.

Where - England
When - Mid August
Size - Cap is 12cm approx, stem is 16cm in length and just over 1.5 cm in diameter
Growing place - On the edge of a mixed woodland about 4 metres from a small road. Growing on a mixture of dead leaves and grass.
Smell - After cutting near the base there is a distinctive nutty smell. It certainly isn’t an unappealing odour.
Colour - When examining the specimen last night the stem quite quickly bruised a bright yellow colour, almost the colour of egg yolk. Left over night this colouring has now turned to a reddy brown.
