Fungus, lichen, or...?

Please try to include photos to show all parts of the fungus, eg top, stem, and gills.
Note any smells, and associated trees or plants (eg oak, birch). A spore print can be very useful.

Fungus, lichen, or...?

Post by NickWood » Thu Nov 23, 2017 8:22 pm

Having browsed my reference books and online sites, I am at a total loss knowing what this is, though it may turn out to be embarrassingly common.
Found today on the side of an old log in deciduous woodland, a small cluster, with individuals growing to 2cm or more. The specimen photographed and bisected clearly has a stem and offshoots, but no sign of pores or spores.
Any ideas?

It's way outside of my sphere and I don't think it is this. However it looks a little bit like something I've seen photos of before.

I don't think this species occurs in the UK anyway.

Certainly in the last photo it looks more like a plant structure than anything else. Some kind of spring bulb coming up early perhaps?

I think it is Toothwort Lathraea squamaria.
It grows parasitic on hazel.

Oops! Looks as though I've posted a plant, not a fungus.
Many thanks, Pitufo and Mal, for the responses and suggestions. From a browse of online photos, it does look like it may be the early stages of L. squamaria - certainly the general structure and coloration (white with a hint of violet; leaves scale like, fleshy and alternate). I'll have to return to the site to see how it develops. Apparently, it flowers March to May, so a bit of a wait!
Thanks, again,
Nick
