I'd hazard a guess at the early stage of Rhopographus filicinus - Bracken Map.

Generally recorded on dead Bracken stems - but presumably infects and grows in living stems?

Common sense is not so common.

just discoloration in my book; have a look at (damp) dead bracken fronds (+ microscope) and there's some interesting stuff around at the moment.
