What Lichen is this please

Post by NellyDee » Thu Oct 18, 2018 2:30 pm

Had a few lichen growing here following our extremely wet weather (NW Scotland) which I have not seen before. This one almost seemed to appear overnight and completely covers the trunk of an old and dying Rowan Tree and next to it and also halfway up a young Birch tree. I am sort of waiting to see if it continues up some other trees nearby. ID would be welcome. No I cannot get nearer to get a closer view, this taken on zoom

Hi Nelly,

I'm no expert on lichens so don't take this as a definite, but it looks to me like one of the Hypotrachyna species.

Perhaps Hypotrachyna laevigata. (Previously known as Parmelia laevigata).

See: - http://www.lichens.lastdragon.org/Hypot ... igata.html for examples of that species.

(But there are several that look quite similar so you would need to check for all the relevant characteristics).

Regards,
Mike.
Common sense is not so common.

There will probably be a mixture of species here, but I think that it is mostly Platismatia glauca - very common in your area.

Best wishes
Paul
