Frog Orchid

Post by jeffnsue » Mon Oct 05, 2015 7:19 am

Hello everybody, so this is where you’re all hiding after WAB!

I’m just posting this photo of a Frog Orchid, taken in Denbighshire this year, to say I’ve found the forum and to say hello again to all those familiar names from WAB. My knowledge of fungi is minimal to say the least but I always made a point of checking out the photos posted on WAB and was regularly amazed by the variety of shapes and colours and toyed for a long time with using some of Mike’s photos on my autumnally decorated study wall, though I never got round to it.

I’m not able to post PM’s yet so this is a rather long-winded way of saying how pleased I am to have tracked you all down.

Hi Jeff, welcome to the forum.

We need knowledgeable people in other taxa as well. :)

Regards, Chris

Thank you for the welcome, Christine, I see I am now able to post PM’s but rather than thank you in that way I’ll do it here.

Here’s a plant in your neck of the woods, Lesser Butterfly Orchid, taken on the blackland at Carnan on the northern tip of South Uist on 5ht August in some of your notoriously variable Hebridean weather. We were too late for the Hebridean Marsh Orchid and too early for Irish Lady’s Tresses, but the commoner orchids were spectacular.

After this little flurry of activity I’ll go to sleep now till the next orchid season, but will post more then, any thoughts of opening a gallery on the forum or are all photos to be posted as attachments?

Jeff

Hello Jeff,
The welcome was from Chris who is one of the key members of OHBR (our fungi specialist, but also excellent on lepidoptera) and also my spouse. It is very confusing, but we pass messages between us so it doesn't matter too much, as long as I don't get asked technical questions about fungi.
Excellent orchid photographs. The season was very late this year so you did well to see our "common species" and Irish lady's tresses was very late this year.
Your records (flora or fauna) would be very welcome additions to our database if you would like to e-mail them to me. If you would like to post your elephant hawk moth in the insects section, I'll post a reply. I think it is interesting enough to share. It will also encourage others to add to these sections and hopefully attract more participants.

Christine

Will do Christine, and I’ll send you some records from our holiday.
I did wonder whether there might be a Chris and Christine when I looked at Hebridensis and saw C&C!
